Wiffle Ball 2009:
14th Annual Northern Virginia Wiffle® World Series

On August 8, 2009, the Fourteenth Annual Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series (NVWWS) was held at Waters Field in Vienna, VA. It was another incredible day as over $39,000 was raised to benefit the Brain Tumor Center at Duke and to aid families coping with a brain cancer diagnosis. The foundation was also able to donate a significant contribution to Vienna Youth, Inc, and the event featured a kid’s tournament with many children's attractions, including a moon bounce, mascots and games. Vienna Mayor Jane Seeman threw out the first pitch, and the ballpark action spilled over into the Vienna Fire Station, where a raffle were held and Vienna Inn sponsored food and beverages. Over 40 teams took the field with dreams of taking home the prestigious NVWWS trophy once again.  The defending champion Vienna Inn Wieners (Ron Slingerman, Jason Farley, Arman Moniri and Brig Tison) introduced the coveted Bedell Cup into the stadium as part of the opening ceremonies and hoped to defend their title. However, after a great day of competitive wiffle ball, the Wieners were knocked out by 2008 Final Four participants Fast Plastic (Ed Brandmark, Henry Brandmark, Robert Dooley and Nate Favero).  The finals featured 1999 & 2005 champions and true wiffle vets, Cocky Lambos (Steve Gatti, Keith Yates, Billy Johnson and Brad Hughes) versus Fast Plastic who brought speed, finesse and a new era of wiffle dominance. Once again, the finals showcased outstanding wiffle pitching and hitting skills, but Fast Plastic was too much to handle as they took home the 2009 Bedell Cup – winning 2-0. The 2009 MVP Award went to Fast Plastic’s, Henry Brandmark, who dominated the mound all day. The 2009 Babe Ruth Award (best hitter) went to Ian Jones from the Vandals. The 2009 Rollie Fingers Award (best pitcher) went to Cocky Lambo’s Steve Gatti.  See you Saturday, August 7, 2010 for the Fifteenth Annual NVWWS!
