Wiffle Ball 2008:
13th Annual Northern Virginia Wiffle® World Series

On August 9, 2008, the Thirteenth Annual Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series  (NVWWS) was held at Waters Field in Vienna, VA – the same field at which Brian grew up playing sports.

The event was an amazing success as over $18,000 was raised to benefit the Brain Tumor Center at Duke and to aid families dealing with a brain cancer diagnosis. Our event this past year featured a kid's tournament once again and many children's attractions, including a moon bounce, an inflatable slide, mascots and games. Vienna Mayor Jane Seeman and Fairfax County Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Gerry Connolly kicked off the day with a home run derby. In addition, former Major Leaguer Curtis Pride threw out the first pitch  The action spilled over into the Vienna Fire Station, where a raffle were held and Vienna Inn sponsored food and beverages. On the Field of Dreams, it was over 40 teams with dreams of taking home the prestigious NVWWS trophy.  The competition was strong once again, but the talk of the day was Fast Plastic, led by Ed Brandmark and 3 young teenage wiffle stars, Henry Brandmark, Robert Dooley and Brendan Fogarty.  They made it all the way to the Final Four and took down Bedell's Bears (Ron Barckhoff, Mike Ryan, Eric McCann and Dave Thompson) in extra innings - winning in Home Run Derby.  However, defending champion Team Future (Brandon Bracher "Captain", Mark Vita and Jim Schiekofer), stood in their way and eliminated the up and coming Fast Plastic stars to return to their 3rd straight finals.  In the finals, Team Future faced the team they beat in 2007 to win their first title.  In a re-match of the 2007 final, they now were up against a more confident group of wiffle veterans which rolled into the finals undefeated.  The team was Madison High baseball alumni now called the Vienna Inn Wieners  (Ron Slingerman, Jason Farley, Arman Moniri and Brig Tison). Once again, the finals showcased outstanding wiffle pitching and hitting skills, but the Vienna Inn Wieners were too much to handle as the Wieners won the title and took home the 2008 Bedell Cup to the Vienna Inn.  The 2008 MVP Award went to Vienna Inn's, Jason Farley, who dominated the mound all day. The 2008 Rollie Fingers Award Winner (best pitcher) went to Fast Plastic's Robert Dooley.  The 2008 Babe Ruth Award (best hitter) went to NVWWS Hall of Fame Umpire, Mark Hottle (in a surprising upset, but fans were impressed).  See you Saturday, August 8, 2009 for the Fourteen Annual NVWWS!

Thank you for your support!
